Frequently Asked Questions
Yes. You can switch during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15βDec 7) each year. There's also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period (Jan 1βMar 31) where you can switch MA plans or return to Original Medicare. However, if you return to Original Medicare after being on MA for over a year, Medigap insurers may not be required to accept you without medical underwriting in most states.
Most Medicare Advantage plans include prescription drug coverage (called MAPD plans). If your MA plan does not include drug coverage, you'll need a standalone Part D plan to avoid the late enrollment penalty. Check your plan's formulary to confirm your specific medications are covered.
CMS limits Medicare Advantage in-network OOP to $9,350 in 2026. Many plans set lower limits. Once you hit the limit, your plan pays 100% for covered in-network services. Note: this cap applies to in-network care; out-of-network services may have a separate (higher) limit or no limit on some plans.
Most HMO-type MA plans only cover care within their service area (except emergencies). PPO-type MA plans typically cover out-of-network care at higher cost-sharing. If you travel frequently or spend time in multiple states, Original Medicare with a Medigap supplement generally offers better coverage nationwide.
Medicare Advantage tends to work best for people who: (1) are generally healthy and don't use much medical care, (2) have preferred doctors and hospitals in the MA network, (3) want extra benefits like dental and vision, (4) live in one geographic area year-round, and (5) want a built-in OOP cap without paying Medigap premiums.
