Medigap FAQs — 2026

Medigap (Medicare Supplement Insurance) is private insurance that covers costs Original Medicare doesn't pay — like the 20% Part B coinsurance, Part A hospital deductibles, and skilled nursing facility coinsurance. Without Medigap, there's no annual cap on what you pay under Original Medicare alone, meaning a serious illness could cost you tens of thousands of dollars. Medigap provides financial predictability. It's most valuable for people who use healthcare frequently, see specialists regularly, or want protection against catastrophic costs.

The best time to buy Medigap is during your 6-month Medigap Open Enrollment Period, which begins the month you are both age 65 or older AND enrolled in Part B. During this window, insurers cannot deny coverage or charge higher premiums based on health conditions (guaranteed issue rights). After this window closes, you can still buy Medigap in most states, but insurers can medically underwrite — meaning they can charge more or deny you coverage based on your health history. Some states have additional protections.

Outside of your guaranteed issue window, switching Medigap plans typically requires passing medical underwriting in most states (except Connecticut, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New York, and a few others with additional protections). Even within the same company, upgrading to a more comprehensive plan may require medical review. Some people "lock in" Plan G early to avoid underwriting risk later. Always consult a licensed insurance broker before switching plans.

No. Medigap plans only work alongside Original Medicare (Parts A and B). They cannot be used with Medicare Advantage plans. If you switch from Original Medicare to a Medicare Advantage plan, your Medigap policy becomes useless — it won't cover your Advantage plan's cost-sharing. If you later want to return to Original Medicare and get Medigap, you may have to pass medical underwriting depending on your state.

Since Medigap benefits are standardized by law (all Plan G policies have identical coverage regardless of insurer), you should comparison shop purely on price, insurer financial strength, and premium rate history. Prices for the same plan can vary by 30–50% between insurers.
